About the RTA

Who We Are

The Riverton Tenants Association (RTA) Executive Board is an all-volunteer body that meets formally each month to represent the interests of Riverton Square residents. All tenants are members of the RTA, and together we work to preserve Riverton as a stable, affordable community where families can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

Our mission is to protect Riverton Square as a place where working and middle-income families can live and raise their children in peace, supported by well-maintained buildings, vibrant open spaces, and a strong sense of community.

To achieve this, the RTA is guided by three core principles: long-term affordability, a high quality of life for residents, and consistent maintenance and stewardship of our buildings and grounds.

Our Guiding Principles

To advance our mission of preserving Riverton Square as a stable and thriving community, the Riverton Tenants Association operates with the understanding that meaningful change happens when neighbors work together. We believe that collective action and informed advocacy are essential to protecting the homes and quality of life of Riverton residents.

To achieve our goals, we are guided by three core principles:

Long-Term Affordability

Riverton Square has long been an important source of housing for working and middle-income families in Harlem. For generations, it has allowed families to remain in the neighborhood, raise their children, and build community.

Today, affordable housing across New York City continues to face constant pressure from rising costs, redevelopment pressures, and shifting housing policies. Preserving Riverton as an affordable community requires vigilance, organization, and advocacy.

The Riverton Tenants Association works to ensure that residents’ rights are protected and that housing policies intended to preserve affordability are honored. We engage with elected officials, housing agencies, and community partners to ensure Riverton remains a place where families can continue to live and thrive for generations to come.

High Quality of Life

Riverton Square is more than just housing—it is a community. The open spaces, courtyards, and shared areas have long provided residents with places to gather, socialize, and enjoy a sense of neighborhood in the heart of Harlem.

The RTA works to preserve and strengthen that sense of community by advocating for safe, secure, and respectful living conditions for all tenants.

This includes addressing issues that affect residents’ everyday lives, such as:

  • Building security and functioning entry systems

  • Reliable elevators and building access

  • Clean and well-maintained common areas

  • Safe lighting and maintained outdoor spaces

  • Sanitation and pest control concerns

Ensuring a high quality of life requires constant attention, communication with management, and collective effort among tenants.

Ongoing Maintenance and Building Stewardship

Proper maintenance is essential to protecting both the safety of residents and the long-term sustainability of Riverton Square.

Residents depend on functioning building systems every day, including:

  • Reliable heat during the winter months

  • Consistent access to hot water

  • Safe and working elevators

  • Secure building entrances

  • Timely response to repairs and maintenance issues

The Riverton Tenants Association works to document and advocate for the prompt resolution of building-wide concerns and individual repair issues. We encourage tenants to report problems, track conditions affecting residents, and engage with management and city agencies to ensure that the buildings are maintained in accordance with housing laws and the expectations of our community.

Maintaining Riverton Square requires ongoing stewardship, transparency, and accountability so that the buildings and grounds remain safe, habitable, and well cared for for generations of residents.
